catsgaloreCat breeds are as diverse and intriguing as the colours of the rainbow, and the Colourpoint Shorthair is an embodiment of such fascination. Often referred to as the “royalty of cats,” these felines are renowned for their Siamese-like origins and vivacious personalities.
If you’re looking to add a keen, sociable, and stunning cat to your family, the Colourpoint Shorthair might just be the perfect choice. But what makes this breed so special?
Breed Profile
Originally developed in the mid-20th century, Colourpoint Shorthairs have a rich lineage intertwined with the elegant Siamese cats.
The breed’s story begins with the arrival of the Siamese cats in the United States in the late 1800s. The unique pointed pattern and striking blue eyes of the Siamese caught the attention of cat fanciers around the world, leading to their popularity. However, some breeders desired a wider range of colours and patterns within the Siamese breed.
These dedicated breeders, who also had a keen interest in the Balinese breed (a long-haired variant of Siamese cats), began crossing Siamese cats with other breeds that carried different colour genes. These crosses included American Shorthairs, Abyssinians, and other domestic shorthair cats with desirable coat patterns.
Selectively breeding these cats for numerous generations, breeders were able to develop the Colourpoint Shorthair breed. The goal was to maintain the elegant body structure, striking blue eyes, and vocal, affectionate nature of the Siamese while introducing a wider variety of coat colours and patterns.
Today, the Colourpoint Shorthair remains closely related to the Siamese breed, sharing many of its excellent traits and distinctive characteristics. They have become a recognised breed by major cat breed registries, captivating cat lovers with their unique charm and beauty.
