Breed Profile
The phrase ‘Mau’ translates to ‘cat’ in ancient Egyptian – a civilisation that revered and worshipped felines. The Egyptian Mau is believed to be a direct descendant of these regal creatures, maintaining a sophisticated demeanour and fleet-footed agility reminiscent of their ancestors.
The Egyptian Mau’s origin story is as captivating as the breed itself. It is believed that these cats were first domesticated around 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, where they were revered and worshipped as sacred animals. They were used to protect grain stores from rodents and to hunt birds along riverbanks.
The distinct spotted coat of the Mau was highly prized and often used as currency. However, the breed faced a decline in numbers due to interbreeding with other domestic cats over time.
It wasn’t until the 1950s that the breed was introduced to the United States, where it gained recognition and popularity. The breed’s unique characteristics and rich history have made it a sought-after pet for those who appreciate its exotic aura.
Today’s Mau’s are a blend of wild grace and domestic adaptability, carrying with them an air of mystery. Despite being one of the rarest breeds initially, they are now cherished family pets around the globe.
The Physical Characteristics
The Egyptian Mau’s most distinguishing feature is its coat pattern, which resembles that of a wild cat. Care for an Egyptian Mau
Owning a cat, especially one as special as an Egyptian Mau, comes with the responsibility of providing the right care. From dietary needs to health considerations, understanding how to care for their unique breed will ensure a long and happy life together.
-
Diet and Nutrition for Egyptian Maus
An Egyptian Mau’s dietary requirements won’t differ vastly from those of other cats. However, their active nature means they need a well-balanced diet that provides sufficient energy and sustenance.
High-quality, protein-rich food is ideal for keeping their coat glossy and maintaining their lean muscle mass. It’s also essential to monitor their intake, as these cats can be prone to overeating if given the opportunity.
Also, watch for dental health by including crunchy kibbles in their diet unless otherwise advised by a veterinarian.
-
Exercise and Play Requirements
To keep your Mau in top condition, regular exercise is a must. Interactive toys can provide mental stimulation as well as physical activity, mimicking the hunting behaviour that Maus are instinctually drawn to.
They also enjoy playing with their human companions and are known to be proficient fetchers.
Providing ample space for them to run and jump will also help satisfy their energetic needs. However, it’s important to keep an eye on them outdoors. Their curious nature may lead them into danger, so a well-secured outdoor space or supervised playtime is best. Consider outdoor enclosures or leash training, keeping in mind the breed’s speed and agility.
-
Grooming Tips and Best Practices
The Egyptian Mau’s short, dense coat requires minimal grooming. Weekly brushing with a rubber curry brush not only removes loose hair but also helps distribute skin oils to give their coat a lustrous sheen.
If needed, occasional baths can help keep their coat clean and healthy. Also, be mindful of dental health by regularly brushing their teeth and scheduling professional cleanings as recommended.
Tooth brushing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning should be part of their regular grooming routine to prevent dental issues, overgrown claws, and ear infections, respectively.
-
Health Considerations and Common Issues
Like all breeds, the Egyptian Mau is prone to specific health issues. Look out for symptoms of genetic disorders such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which affects the heart muscles, or renal amyloidosis, a type of kidney disease.
Regular veterinary check-ups and staying up-to-date with vaccinations are essential to maintaining your Mau’s well-being. It’s also important to monitor their weight and dietary intake, as obesity can lead to health problems in any breed.

Their adaptability means they can integrate into both quiet homes and those with more active routines, provided they receive the love and attention they crave.
Factors to Consider Before Adopting
Before accepting an Egyptian Mau into your life, it’s important to consider the long-term commitment. These cats have been known to live for up to 15 years or more.
